welcome back to Bonanza disc golf and to another kind of episode of project 100 where I don't want to talk to my normal Coach Josh but I instead am talking to someone named Tyler TD he also has a YouTube channel here which you should definitely check out but I wanted to get him onto the channel because I wanted to talk to him about how as a smaller guy he went from throwing about 380 to about 450 over the course of this off season and the three main things that he did to do that wasn't meant to be like the three main things but that's what it ended up turning into because those are the things that he worked on so real quick I'm going to let him introduce himself so my name is Tyler TD I've been playing disco for as of next month like two years so my first tournament was in May of 2021 played a little bit beforehand then we'll attempting it serious till like April of 2021. I was taking videos of my form from like day one instantly I was like I want to learn how to throw further I want to do like slow-mo videos and I think that's like the biggest thing is like being really obsessive about it not like obsessive over like all the little details necessarily but just like constantly wanting to improve and like trying to figure out what's wrong with it real quick as well how big are you because this is one one of the main reasons I wanted to talk to Tyler is I'm off everyone knows I'm like two and a half maybe three feet tall on a good day yeah and uh I don't throw short by any stretch of the imagination but a lot of times you see a lot of these people throw far quickly they're bigger dudes and you are not a bigger dude you're bigger than me but uh how big are you taller than you I'm not necessarily bigger I'm five eight maybe yeah five seven or five eight depending on what size platforms you're wearing yeah yeah yeah depending on how many inches of platform I'm wearing but yeah I'd say I'm around five eight probably like that that's probably accurate and uh I'm like 140 pounds like I'm not a big guy I'm pretty skinny yeah and for reference I'm five six and I'm probably a little overweight from like where I need to be muscle to Fat ratio wise I'm not like out of shape by any stretch but I'm 165 so I got a little especially if you look at my legs I got a little bit extra there it all just sits right in my legs so now you guys know a little bit more about both of our backgrounds I asked them about the biggest jump in his distance and the first thing even though it wasn't necessarily something that I needed to hear in a major way it's a very helpful cue to think about because even when he talked about it I noticed something in the way he was doing it that related to how I've been thinking about the same issue with my form I think the biggest jump in distance for me was probably in this past off season I went from probably realistically on like golf shots if you put me on an open field and we're like there's a basket you know x amount of feet away and you have to get into it I was probably throwing like 380 but in the off season I put a lot of effort into trying to throw accurately and far at the same time and then like also increasing that distance I would say if I'm like warmed up like good to go at a tournament I would say like 450 on an open field like golf shot kind of like if you're on like a golf green like so not like max distance but just like golf line your you see a 450 foot shot that is a line that you can like throw and you're like I can get to that basket so going from that 380 to the 450 accurate and consistent mark this awesome I just love to know like what are the things that you'd work on the biggest biggest thing for me and this might not be the same for everyone but on my reach back and I know like not every Pro does this if you look at Calvin his reach backs like this he's also like six three when I was throwing on like my MAX Line I was also kind of doing that where I was like getting to hear and then kind of just pulling it through like that and I think like learning to loosen up and like really get that full extended reach back it gives you like so much more room for acceleration um and I think that was like a big thing is once I learned to like let my arm fully go back and pull through were there any like cues that you'd use in order to do that because one of the things I even noticed in you doing that is it was less honestly of your arm reaching back between those two because your arm was here yeah and like this is like you're yeah you're not loose but that's fine what you did the second time was your shoulder extended a little bit more this yeah are there any like cues that you did in order to get that way because I I tend as well sometimes I'll reach back to like here right right keep these shoulders kind of more like not all the way facing back like they could and like I feel like even that's where you see like an Emerson Keith who he's a small dude I think he's my size if not smaller you know he's small I wanted GMC last year yeah he's like here he's like he's really small and he throws further than me so and he throws like this he never comes out of this position he goes back and he comes forward just like that and I think that's because this is something I was talking with Josh from over there disc golf is like a lot of it is shoulder coil it's not arm extension and I tend to focus on let me get my arm all the way back and extend it instead of like doing this my arm is back here but if I just coil my shoulders a little bit more my arm's even farther back uh and so I think yeah even in you doing that you're it was a lot of like you're extending your arm and your shoulder was also coiling a bit as well what do you do you know like what helped you do that I don't think there was much of a cue is I would watch a video of myself and I'd see that I wasn't getting that full rotation backwards and like you can just kind of see it you're like oh you're really not reaching back even though you think you are so I would throw into a net or throw outside and I would think like doesn't matter how far you throw it doesn't matter like how hard you throw just like get that full rotation and reach back every single time like over exaggerate it like I'm never gonna feel like this in a tournament I'm never gonna think about it this much like just Super Hyper focused on that one thing and get like a ton of reps with it and eventually it kind of becomes second nature so now I don't really think about it because I did so many reps where I was just like like reach way all the way back and like get that full rotation um and now I don't know if I like fully reach back every single time but like it definitely is a lot more natural so I wanted to ask him how long it took him to actually get to this point where he was throwing this far how much work he did over the off season because if you guys have been watching my journey it's been a lot of work and I haven't been working as much as I probably could have because I've been working on this channel and making content because this is my job and it's a little bit more important than getting great at disc golf to make a full-time living you know what I mean speaking of if you want to buy some then stamp disks tons of fission hexes and we still have some glitches left but this is what he had to say in terms of time commitment to getting to this point day one starting in the field there wasn't as much but if I just kept going and just kept saying like like four or five times a week go to the field for like 30 minutes to an hour and just throw a bunch of discs and focus on these things you're trying to focus on for each week I definitely saw like distance increase each week and like I'd say about like the fifth or sixth week versus the first I was throwing at least 20 feet further just just in that amount of time yeah yeah that's awesome but like yeah overall from beginning to end in the whole off season like it was it was definitely like four or five months to increase all that distance and that's again four or five times a week no breaks like constantly doing that so yeah yeah that makes sense so I wanted to take a second now to look at some form that he had sent over from the beginning of his form change like right when he was starting as well as now and just to kind of look at what the differences were before we move into these next two things that he wants to talk about now like I always say I'm not a coach by any means but we can see this is from December kind of the startish of his form change he looks a little bit less comfortable that stride is pretty big and you can see that he doesn't really get a full reach back like he was just talking about it's decent coil but honestly a really good foundation to start from when we look at this next one honestly a lot of it is it just looks a little bit more confident we could see that his coil is a little bit further back he's actually really doing well one of the things that we're going to talk about third which is really whipping that disc back and forward his stride is a lot less than from his first shot and that I think helps to give him much better balance and bass to throw from not really what I'm saying what he's saying and that's what we're going to talk about next now the next thing which is the second thing that he was going to tell me anyways was something that I'd heard in a video that he put out before which is about how he started throwing over 400 feet consistently and he mentioned that as a short guy it was something that he was doing and that really resonated with me and even though you probably can see recently even that I haven't put it into practice as much as I could have this is what he had to say was like one of the biggest things in terms of footwork as a shorter dude trying to throw a little bit further so one of the things as well you I've heard you talk about it in a video and I've thought about it a little bit and put into practice a very little bit but I think what I have done it's been a little helpful is some of the stuff that you've talked about footwork and especially I remember you mentioned this as saying like hey I'm a smaller guy and I see all these people stride so much but I'm focused on having a shorter step like your last step is that something that you still think about a little bit or like what brought you that conclusion and how how does that work because I think that was probably one of the things that might help me the most this is something I realized and I don't even I don't know if someone told me or if I realized myself but if you look at these guys who you're trying to model your form after like I mean how tall is Simon or you go like what like six three like big germs like six five or something like that so when you watch like Simon do like a normal throw and his feet are like super far apart or like Eagle does this a lot is he really has like a big last step and that's just because he's super tall and his legs are super long so he can do that I was also doing the same thing and stepping about just as far but I'm like half a foot if not more like shorter than them so I was like having less balance and when you think about it if you want to plant your foot and you want all that momentum to go like back basically through your arm and like get that to all go like through your body and you're not gonna be able to transfer that as efficiently if you're like off balance and like really like stepping now you're focusing more on like balancing and like staying upright where if you can there's like a sweet spot between a super long step and like a super like truncated step where you're getting that power from stepping but you're not like overdoing it so I do still think about that when I'm trying to throw far like I think don't like overdo it just have a normal like easy step and like focus on getting the rotation and like driving through like my legs and like my core and everything so yeah that's 100 one of the things that Tyler was really reiterating over the course of our call was just getting your body into the throw and this is something that I notice is especially when I'm trying to throw smoothly sometimes I will not actually still get my body into throat and commit I think it's the difference of trying to throw hard and trying to throw a committed shot where my heart shots a lot of times I'll just like over rotate and juice it whereas I committed shot I'll get my body into it but I'll still trust my form and that leads us into the next part of our conversation which is pretty interesting because it started off talking about something that we both struggled with a little bit which is learning and having to relearn things and it ended with a an interesting form cue that I had never really thought about before but might work for somebody out there maybe even including me but when I went and tried to put into practice it didn't really work out too well personally but obviously worked for him and this is one of the things that he credits to getting him to that 450 consistent Point yeah I mean everyone's going to be individual so you got to figure out what works for you something that I see most common though and this is something that I recently like maybe sort of like forgot a little bit and then re-learned I don't really know like I feel like recently I had an epiphany I was like oh I gotta do this or throw further even though like I have been throwing kind of far earlier I don't really know but recently it helped me like kind of have a good uh Eureka moment I guess so that's the process though for sure it's just like I'm like oh I know all these things and then I forget it and then like six months and I'm like oh wait I used to do this and this was awesome and it's like that helped me relearn anhyzers like this week so I literally have a Notes app on my phone called like disc golf notes where I have like a section for each like part of my game that I put notes so I like don't forget to do them like I'm like okay when I'm putting like from like 40 plus like make sure you do this because it works for you when you do it and then I like forget and look at the note I'm like oh yeah I can like make my putts if I do this that's a really good idea that so yeah I realized this recently I was watching so I'm from Rochester in 2014 they had a bunch of pros come for the Rochester flying disc open I think feldberg won it but Simon went into a playoff with him and he played really well at one of my local courses like 15 minutes from my apartment so I like to watch that video like every couple months just to kind of like gauge like all right here's like the best player at the tournament that played here of the pros like this is how you play Let's you know compare that to how I'm playing and I noticed he does this and like Kyle Klein does this now they do this thing where the disc is kind of here the whole time and let me I'm gonna take my headphones off I don't really hear it yet but so they do this thing where their disc is kind of like here the whole time and it's just this one quick little motion where it's like step and then reach back and go forward or I think before I was kind of like reaching and then pulling through but it's really just this one like quick little emotion where you get to hear where you set and then it's just you just like your arm is super loose and it's just back and then whip forward it's so easy to do that when you're just standing there with no disc in your hand but when you go and try to throw like you have it just it just feels different and like really thinking like all right just stay super loose and then when I step just do that bam that motion right there like I really just thought about that and it's hard I'm probably not doing a Justice like doing it in my office in front of my camera you know but if you go and watch those videos Kyle Klein like Simon throwing when he was younger yeah okay I definitely see that that little like whip not everyone does it but I found that it works really well for me and like in order to get everything to whip forward you do have to be really loose like you don't want to be like having your arm Be Stiff because you're just not gonna get everything to move as fast if you want your arm to like fly forward it has to be loose yeah that makes a lot of sense I mean those are the two things that I probably think about the most is like making sure my step isn't like super far engaging my body in the throw and then having that reach back be like fluid I'm like in one motion and like you know not being too stiff with it a lot of it's stuff that like it's just good to hear sometimes in different perspectives or different reasonings because I like I feel like if you if you look at form enough you basically know everything that you need to know but you don't know how to implement it yourself all the time which is why I'm always like finding cues and talking to different people is like the way you explain it might make sense in a whole new way to me even though I completely understand the concept it just clicks for some reason and so that's why I like having people like you on who do throw far so just chat about this and be things that like I can continue working on because I have literally a month from today is if I get off the waitlist it's gonna be my first tournament I'm not sad about how far I'm thrown but I definitely think that I'm gonna be working on my form throughout this whole season unfortunately definitely uh wanting to have at least the foundation that like okay I know what a good throw is so I can diagnose it in between tournaments and like during the tournament and like my base is good now I just need to figure out a good throw every time that I throw I do want to talk about one more thing actually because this was and if you will watch my video I just did on the you know my recent tournament this was like this was really really helpful in helping me like succeed at that tournament I'm a huge fan of simplifying your throw like even on my next distance shots like it should be it should feel simple and I think that was a big issue that I ran into before I was trying to over complicate things I was like all right my step asset is this I reached back yesterday this I have to rotate at this point the power pocket here like if you're trying to think of all those things while you're throwing you're gonna mess up and it's gonna be yeah obviously when you're practicing you do want to think of them but you should never never never never have any of those thoughts ever in a tournament like this should never cross your mind if you are throwing poorly in a tournament then that's the tournament you showed up to and that's how you're gonna play like you're not gonna fix it during the tournament that was a big thing for me was like trusting that I put in the work and then I can do it and like you will execute if you've done the work and you just like trust it yeah any final parting thoughts you want to plug yourself real fast got a great Channel let's get them to a thousand subscribers but yeah come get into that monetization Mark I got a lot of tournaments coming up I'm playing like a crazy amount of tournaments this year mostly YouTube I do like a little bit of tick tock and Instagram but I appreciate you being on go check out his channel I'll go do some field work so I wanted to give a big shout out to Tyler for being on the channel so please go ahead and subscribe to him right over here I definitely am going to be putting some of these things into action especially thinking about that last step because I noticed when I throw that my pull through starts happening before my heel is into the ground and I'm bracing into it and so by shortening up that last step and keeping everything else the same that'll just make that step happen faster meaning I'm bracing into it more meaning that everything else is a little bit more properly timed and hopefully adding a little bit of distance even though my distance has increased a little bit even since this call just working on some things actually slowing down everything is starting to come together so big thank you guys for you all who are watching this channel two weeks from tomorrow is when I'm supposed to start my tournament season so a little bit nerve-wracking on that front but subscribe if you want to continue following along the Journey of me trying to catch it approach to event subscribe to him because he's also has the similar goal and the best way to support me if you want is to buy some of my shadow Advanced stamp this this is the last run of Chad Advanced stamps after this completely gone we will have some new stamps probably in slightly smaller runs that will be a little bit more limited just because I want to play more hopefully make more videos and not worry too much about the sales aspects so if you want to help me by buying out all this stuff to be really helpful as I get into my tournament season but no matter what your viewership means so much to me thank you so much for spending your time if you want to check out the last video of me working on some form stuff and a lot of things that I've learned check it out right down there okay love you bye
