all right everyone welcome back this is round one back nine coverage from the 2019 MVP open at Maple Hill this is road life commentary comin atcha I'm Nate Perkins joined here by the newly crowned five-time world champion page Pierce I'm so excited to be back this is the back nine like you said it gets really long super technical right now I'm at 3-under Sara who comes at 1-under Amanda well Mel wookies at 2-over and Christina Dagger is 11 over yeah like you said the back nine of this course is really where the distance is gonna come into play a little bit more so some long putts from you to start this tournament out yeah I'm hoping to keep that going back on the deck this is probably the signature role the castle I don't know there's there's some there's a lot of good ones here at Maple Hill it's really hard to pick the castle hole hole this has always been an epic one its Holton this year par-3 255 eight feet place more like 330 maybe what do you think Paige yeah something like that about at least 300 and honestly it's very tricky because the closer you are to the wall the trickier your putt is so you want to get it up there of course but not too close to that wall yeah it can almost be unmei Keable if you're right up against that wall yeah or force you to throw a turbo putt or something like that so Amanda doesn't get quite all the way up there but she's far enough away from the wall where she can use her normal putt and Christina the am side winner of this event last weekend is now throwing she is a little bit nervous I talked to her during the round she said that you know this is her first time on a feature card and she's uh she's looking she's not a pro by any means she's looking to play an world's coming up soon but she's just embracing this she lives about an hour away so she's pretty Oh awesome to be here and that's really one of the dangers of the castle whole you kind of got a pic you want to get it either way on top or choose to kind of lay it up to that right side yep sit oh and no one's gonna roll as well it did curl though so it's inside the circle but that's just like you said you definitely got to choose and she needed a little bit more power on that one that one just hung on your hand a little too long kinda reminds me of that Paul rhubari video all right how come this is that great-looking putt instant replay action awesome jump push putt up onto the castle from in the woods and Sara's moving to 2-under par through 10 holes anything under par here is gonna keep you in the mix oh definitely this tournament Amanda connects on a great putt there coming back with the birdie moving back to 4-under through 10 holes and we are moving on to hole 11 par 4 670 feet you need about 350 feet of distance to clear the last wall of Christmas trees right there you want to land right in that pocket ladies are playing to this pin right over here that you see on your left up against that rock wall it gets very tricky if you don't clear those Christmas trees you're really out of position if you can't get to that first landing zone yeah kind of similar to hole one in that aspect you don't want to be anywhere near Christmas trees or your approach is super super difficult and that's a full flight from Sarah on that forehand she's happy with it I believe she just cleared those Christmas trees and this is really a great hole for you to just open up just play some your distance huge advantage for you to be able to take this overstable disc and just crank on it yeah this is my bio fusion defender it's my favorite driver I'm just ripping on it you can put a little turn on it and it gets that Glide but it's still gonna fade out over stable over stay will finish and I will be past the Christmas trees but I think I might have got a little bit too much Heiser so I might be on the left side this course is pretty cool because its primary objective is a Christmas tree farm and so every year the course is slightly different at least on these Christmas tree holes you know it's the same whole tee pad to basket but you know the terrain changes a little bit it's pretty cool Christina doesn't quite get past the Christmas trees but she's dead center we'll see if she has a look to get out a little bit early doesn't she's going she was trying to go Heiser around that tree but she gets it out there now just a sea of Christmas trees really want to clear the East to have any chance of birdie on this hole Amanda was pretty far out of position belief she's just laying that one up to make the approach a little easier she's got about 200 left on Heiser to the pin Wow I was a great spike hyzer unfortunately a little bit too short and to the left but I love that release she just said oh man that is tracking whoa and now an almost me made that one and believe we miss Sarah's approach but this is what she has left for birding you can see the wind looks like she's got a strong tail one putt and man that jump that's looking good from her today Wow and you went 30 feet long Jim the comeback putt yeah it's kind of a death putt from back there you're just staring at chains and then a bunch of Christmas trees but there's there is a drop-off right there so and a good-looking 22 footer from Sarah this rounds definitely starting to heat up you move to 5-under through 11 holes how come also joining me under par I'd have to assume there's not going to be too many players under par for the round Amanda another missed putt right side you know it's a common thing that happens just the the missed putts on the right side we're moving on to hole 12 par-4 650 feet one of the few holes that the min and the women play the same pad ideally you want to land up on top of this hill to have a look down this gap right here this pin that is tucked over here it's a pretty tough shape if you don't have the 450 feet of distance to get to the top of the hill it can be a really tricky birdie you might be one of the few players in your division that has the distance to get to that hilltop the three is still possible for a few few of the women out there but it gets really difficult if you if you can't at little at the very minimum clear 400 feet yeah you definitely got to get over those Christmas trees and if you can't then take a little bit of distance off and just go to the left left of them so you're in the open Krystyna little - nose up this is gonna leak way left hopefully she's not in the woods clean out but still a little bit shy of where you want to be to attack the green it's a first sidearm we've seen of Amanda it looked great coming out nice spin and you're just a little bit out of position put a move on that putter though great looking angle think you liked it yeah that's great it's it's it's it's possible from there it's definitely a very tough shape I'm Sarah what's a beautiful approach but gets a huge skip off that green go back to back side arms and this one was super clean great approach you know what she's approaching right there I don't actually some overstable MVP mold yeah I was definitely maybe the entropy I know the entropy is a popular harp type disc yeah it just came out a couple months ago that one almost looked like a mid-range though is it entropy a putter it's like a putt approach okay like one of those that's in between and yeah she cleans up that stroke a little bit get that on the pole and it's that where that shot landed that is amazing Wow and that was a blind approach that you had to the basket correct uh I couldn't see the basket itself but I can see the gap most of the gap and I know my putter pretty well so if I just put that Marshall on a turn it just kind of holds it and that was a huge stroke swing you pick up three strokes on hokum right there and we're moving on to hole 13 par-3 405 feet you're teeing off straight downhill and this one is so tricky because you're teeing off from on this hill that's very exposed to the wind and then you tee down into this tunnel where the wind is completely different this has always been one of the more difficult birdies out here at Maple Hill there's really not a lot of OB to speak of but because of how tight that gap is and how far away you're gonna see a lot of bogeys on this hole now look at all these wind balances it's like you said this is the windiest hole in the course I would say and it's really showing right now even my shirt flopping around yeah that that gate keeper just air bounce like three or four times before it even got to the gap I mean look at these discs just bouncing around in the air it's crazy looking and something you absolutely have to account for because this is a very common thing on this hole so the lower the better on this release and just try to kind of knife it into the gap yeah low is good and anything that if you really expose the disc too much on any sharp angle whether it be hyzer and Heiser the wind is really gonna exaggerate it see Sarah's was just a little too much Annie and the wind just pushed it even further left and these approaches can be really tricky yeah sometimes you can see the basket from down there left where Amanda was but you're lucky if you can poke them with a floatie backhand approach and even down here in this protected green you can see the wind - coming into play just a little low from Amanda all right moving on to hole 14 par-3 285 feet we're actually flying out from the men's pad here the women's pad is just off to the left but you're gonna still have to carry water the entire length of the hole this is kind of what I think of when I think of signature maple hill right here Kohl 14 I can agree with that I think this is one of my favorite part threes and hokum throws it so well with a sidearm too she's throwing a super super flippy fairway driver on a hyzer over the water and letting it get a late flip in landing this is such a difficult shot and you're going a little bit more traditional you're going high spike hyzer and that's a good safe shot but that also puts you in a tricky position whether you're gonna run for that death putter lay that one up yeah if you don't get your drive wide enough you are now faced with a very difficult decision on running a putt or not right at the water also a few highs are too much too early there is a pond that you can find on the left side of the hole certainly in play luckily Amanda just hit a tree and kicked towards the fairway so she will not be out of bounds and you can see the wind coming off the water right there shoving those this further away from the pin also leaving you guys with some headwind looks right at the water not the ideal putt you want and Amanda wants nothing to do with it lays that one up hokum looks to be running it though such a sketchy putt oh and she put it way up in the air too that's so scary with her putting style just a tiny bit low and did you lay that one up I did lay that one okay yep there's the D right there I didn't want anything to do with that water yeah 6-under feels good at this point in my round so I'm not trying to add any over strokes to that yeah and you're likely picking up strokes on the majority of the field here with a with the par or at least not losing any yeah so through 14 I'm 5 under Katrina's 3 under Kristen Tatar is 1 under and then we have a bunch of people gathered at even moving on to hole 15 par-3 355 feet it's dead straight the entire way you've got trees to your left in to your right and they're very early off the tee anything early drops down into a little gully that makes it very difficult to get up and down baskets perched right up here on this stump picturesque would it hold oh yeah this is my favorite hole in the course is just so beautiful and when you hit this gap it's so rewarding hokum going with another flippy fairway either flip but doesn't quite get it to flat so she's gonna leak to the right such a technical player though such a fun player to watch throw those flip up shots there is a putt from over there too and you're going gate keeper here oh and that is picture-perfect misses that last tree on the right Heiser Zane gets a little skip within set within 20 feet yeah beautiful shot Amanda Oh a little bit early but she squares it so it's not gonna get a bad kick it's just gonna drop to the base of that tree she'll have some work to do but she'll have a look Christina great throw gets all the way across the valley little short of the basket but she's just outside circle too and Amanda had a pretty clean gap she goes pure Heiser all the way up there she's gonna have a long look for her par I mean they're kind of having some troubles on this whole looking ahead a big one here oh she lays it up decides not to add any more strokes to it now there is a small drop off behind this basket oh and Sarah is really getting that long-range putt dialed another good look and run solid Christina found that backside that you're talking about where it does drop off so she's slightly under the basket having to put a tiny bit nose up doesn't connect and you can tell she said just a little bit Oliver out of her element you know the nerves are definitely running high on this filmed card and that is just that's an absolute part job right there that that's the closest one I've seen in a while that's a great pickup you're moving to 6-under par through 15 holes you're leading the way and we are moving into another contender for a signature hole out here at Maple Hill hole 16 par 3 is it only 405 feet yeah it's really downhill way sounds like 550 or something anyhow more like 500 feet maybe plays like 400 feet because of how downhill it is but you can see the basket the entire length of the hole such a beautiful fairway yeah it's 5:30 I can see it up on the sign up there so that's my bio fusion defender I'm going through the right gap to avoid the tree kick there is OB on the left side if you get through all the trees and if you hit a tree and kick left you're likely to find it no it's it's game over if you get the real like kick way left there's OB and it's a pretty tricky up-and-down another one of those at Maple hose I can one throw can turn into two strokes real quick there's also a gap on the right side that you'll see a lot of people kind of leak into to get all the way down there and that spectator wall that you see down there by the green that actually is not beyond this whole it's just for spectators and advertisement Christina kind of skips over to the left side where those trees are but she didn't get through him so she will be safe but it's pretty tricky from in there as you can see she had to pitch out and a good-looking shot from Christina and that defender got all the way down there out into the open and you're left with a simple marshal upshot Amanda now from circles edge all right right runs it in good good one authorites a par four yes it is women okay she chewed it and it's definitely a justifiable par four I mean this is great three any day for men or women yeah it's a really hard one to get the gap all the way through right we're moving into hole 17 par-3 373 feet and we're actually flying out of the men's pad once again the woman's pad is yeah it's down to the right farther than you can see currently yeah it's pretty it's a pretty strong left to right pretty tight gap tight angle plays like a dogleg you pretty much have to break the shot down into two you're going straight the basket at all yeah it's actually a par four so I can just go putter to there and then another putter dead Street and actually plays pretty easy part par-4 so pretty easy easy to get the birdie there anything early right though from this pad is gonna put you out of position it's a smart play as you said is to break it down into two shots unless you have a big side are my kokum but she doesn't even try to get around the corner too much she's not trying to push her look and and challenge those branches if you clip those branches and and drop down it's very tricky from in there and Amanda with just enough distance to make the corner christina stands still uphill I would say she she tried to throw that a little bit too hard and unfortunately turned it into those woods right there so this this is a pretty routine approach but this basket is one of the elevated ones out here at Maple Hill and it's elevated and on top of a little rock ledge as well so if you go long it's a pretty tough uphill putt yeah makes you make sure that your upshot is floating in there and not coming in too hot to go down that hill because it's it's it's elevated and it's a drop-off so it's like very tall but like you said one of the easier holes on the course actually hole 17 was playing as the single easiest hole during round one and this might be a 20-footer but this is a pretty scary one with how steep that drop-off is behind the basket a little bit low sometimes those ones the scary ones are hard to fully commit to oh and you and Sarah both are just parked for birdie threes you're moving to 8-under Sarah's move it to 2-under you guys are pulling away from this card and you are separating ourselves from the rest of the field really and we're moving into the final hole of round one hole 18 it's a par 4 605 feet we've got a new OB wall here deep and left you've got an OB rock wall the entire length of the hole on your right and then the basket is actually on an island green right here this rock wall right here that we're flying over separates this from this green right here I mean such a tiny green you need 350 feet of distance at least to even consider going for the screen no this is a beautiful-looking Drive if that gets down yeah just not quite enough turn on my ballista Pro there I was trying to get around the corner and give myself an opportunity to go for birdie but just didn't turn it enough so I'm Abby left Sarah with her tres getting all that D even with the branches taking some distance off she's well across the bridge and with the sidearm as good as hers she might be in a good enough position to go for that green yeah she's right on the edge of whether or not she could go for it Amanda great looking straight shot that gets a little bit of turn she hits those same branches but hers kind of stops right there Christina looking for that full flight center cut and this is a little too deep so Amanda's gonna lay that one up safe she's gonna be left without 100 feet yep and it looks like Sarah's also opted to lay this one up yeah I wanted to save par here son Garmin my felon I just know I need to commit wide and I did not it came out early so I'm gonna find OB for my second time on this hole that was beautiful oh it's beautiful she liked it a lie no it was a little bit short actually it looked perfect but yeah you can the view that you guys have right now is really the same view that all the players have you really can't quite see the entire green when you're approaching here it makes it that much more difficult and right there all of people watching it's definitely a nerve-wracking approach to this final hole and so if you saw the drop zone that is only if you ever cross the island and landed OB but since I never cross the island I'm putting from right there and not really make a bull so just trying to get it on the green and Amanda's doing the same I'm sorry Christina oh and that one just heard since she's just laughing it off yeah and that was to save par and to shoot two down you know she's thinking about that one yeah where she's walking right now is the scoring tent you know we add and score cards up in there and she said come on Sarah you can't lose focus not even on that ten footer so it's true it's a good lesson good lesson to learn sucks that it has to happen at this high caliber of a tournament but she will not do that again I'm sure and even after a double bogey to finish you shoot a scorching six under par to lead the pack sarah hokum finishes that one down after missing that short one amanda plus six kristina plus 24 katrina allen coming in hot as well with a four down and sarah and kristen tatar are gonna round out our lead card for round two at 1-under par each thank you guys for tuning in and listening to commentary from the road really
