all right everyone welcome back to G K prose post round coverage of the 2019 Idlewild open driven by the Nattie and in of a champion discs I'm Nate Perkins and I'm joined here today with Brian Earhart what's going on everybody we have a fantastic final round I'm super excited to commentate on this we have Kevin Jones James Conrad Calvin Heinberg and Dan Hastings some differing play styles out here on this really strange in very challenging course here at Idlewild yeah very challenging it is listed as the hardest course on the disc golf Pro Tour I totally agree with that there's a lot of really interesting shot shapes I think it definitely helps to have a sidearm out here but clearly for James that's not too much of an issue but going into hole number one 638 foot par four this is for a few people in this tournament definitely e global yeah I think all four of the players again on this lead card final round have at one point to this hole we've seen Kevin do it we've seen James do it in years past we saw Calvin do it in round one they're definitely looking for an eagle here oh absolutely this is definitely one you can put inside circle what if you have the arm for it and there's a guy right there who can definitely put it inside circle one unfortunately he was not playing it this year is that a wild open and through two rounds Kevin is absolutely setting a new pace for this course 22 under is a number that I thought might do it after three rounds oh yeah 12 down for round 1 is absurd that is absolutely pure exotic even round two with a 10-under par so this is Kevin's glide edie to he's gonna start this one out on the left and even though there's OB on the Left Kevin's still really trust that Heiser release which is really skillful as a beautiful tee shot just that super late flip I mean it didn't start flipping until it's a good 250 down the fairway Oh I and we have a clean-shaven James Conrad a new man ready to attack the final round and he is back three on Kevin who's looking for his first disc golf Pro Tour win so I hope hoping to chase him down and I think snag his second is that gonna be a second Pro Tour win hmm you know he's won Idlewild and he's also won Maple Hill so he's looking at his third James I think Owen ray Thea this is a wraith that's huge suit aful and it's interesting this season he's really gotten away from the destroyer he's thrown a lot more slower discs but he's shaping them so perfectly and that's pin-high yeah yeah the wraith is the fastest disc that James O throat now he mentioned to me that destroyers are for wind or if he needs like a big hyzer shot of some sort but someone who does love throwing the destroyer is Calvin Heinberg and he's another person that has a shot at two in this hole yeah we saw him put it in circle one in round one slight hyzer drifting a little bit too much should be an easy up-and-down for a three though he got pretty far down there yeah that's really the miss that you're looking for there's no OB on that right side and there is a line of obe along the entire length of the left side of the fairway and a new sign e to disc craft dan Hastings is on the lead card which is awesome very solid sidearm game and obviously as you can see here pretty strong backhand drifted a little bit too far right you know Dan act actually just recently had one of the highest averaging tournaments of all time if not the best day ever of disc golf okay best date confirmed he shot an eleven hundred rate around and nearly eleven hundred rated round incredible and with that sidearm he just threw that's what really should get some of those strong rounds is a very very competent sidearm Kevin I think is just gonna be chilling here for a three yeah with that elevated pain it definitely definitely tends you tend to see more layouts from that distance it's like James has a little bit of crosswind on this put a little trickle out 222 this is a tester to start the round yeah as you can see with the trees in the background the wind today is blowing a little bit more than it was in previous days but James makes do for the three and four all these elite level distance throwers a three on this hole feels a lot like a par dan after a great sidearm is gonna get up and down for a three as well and we are gonna move into hole number two yeah hole to par for 610 feet they've moved this one back this year makes the tee shot a little bit more important right it does you have to push it a little bit more forward the farther back you go it used to be you know you could crash a righty Heiser into the green and they've pushed it straighter and farther back to where you now have to choose some sort of straight driver or a straight mid-range to get to the basket but yes like you said pushing it towards this path is gonna make that upshot a lot easier and that's the extra the pin position of last year's Idyllwild open this year it's up and about would you say about a 90 feet yeah up into the right mm-hmm Kevin I'm assuming is gonna go sidearm again yeah this is his stable d2 trying to throw this one flat a little bit of Heiser yeah that little bit of Heiser is definitely crucial you can't push it too far forward and that's why I do like like the shape of this hole you want to be out into the right like Kevin just did so you want to get it going left to right right away and I think James is gonna go high turn over here that's James's t-bird just a little low little too much angle but he's he's still in a decent position to throw a hyzer to the pin yeah he actually might still throw that t-bird and it's a little early release from Calvin and he's definitely gonna be out of position and this is a zoo so he might go slight hyzer release here and a little bit early but he's not gonna be in a horrible position actually looks like Calvin has a decent window and with his arm he's probably lining this one up he'll go the distance oh yeah turned a little bit yeah it just gets over that OB pond about 89 to the basket and Dan I think is still gonna probably go for it with a sidearm here I'll be going Zeus again I imagine looked like it I it held the turn kind of like a Zeus would but I think it held the turn a little bit too much and as you can see the wind is still ripping out there not quite sure where Dan landed one James is going over stable splits the trees that's gonna sit down and that green does slope right to the left down toward that water it looked like he sat down just before the out-of-bounds and Kevin's just in premium position whoa and that was a staple frisbee that might have been in his a - he ripped that thing flat and the wind just did not want anything to do with it it's still a good shot today and landing I'm assuming his own nice and soft next to the basket it also trickled trickled to about 20 so this is James for his birdie after rolling down the hill man just a little left side plenty of chains but when it's uphill like that you you tend to see those fall out a little bit more especially when you're not committing fully and hitting that weak side Calvin capitalizing on the par and I if I'm seeing this correctly it looks like Kevin has a chance to take another stroke on James here and there it is he does extending the lead to four that's got to feel pretty comfortable with how he's been playing this course oh yeah and I think the whole sets up for him too he's put in so much work into his sidearm and it's definitely showing out here for sure and it looks like Dan did unfortunately go out of bounds on that second shot taps in his bogey hole number three is probably my favorite part three shape on this course I really enjoy the shot that it makes the players throw we have OB all down the left side and it's going downhill the entire way so you have to throw something that pushes forward at the end of its flight rather than fading so you'll see a lot of you know flip up fairway drivers and I think Emerson Keith I think got this hole and aced it with a 12 speed yeah whatever you can get popped up you know flat and finishing straight so you've got this OB Creek just in front of the pin that forces you to push it pin high or longer exactly you have to be full committed if you want to run this basket Kevin trying to go hyzer flip and that and that was a fortunate break because that had too much Heiser on it that was headed for early OB left James hoping to take a stroke here James has just been absolutely pure in this with the t-birds that's a perfect for this shape yeah and once again just no problem scoots a little long he's got about a 35 have that right you might have that tree to contend with as well Calvin is throwing his eagle and that looks like he crushed it as well that's gonna sit down right about the same spot as James 35-footer it's amazing how he can get those Eagles to fly so flat and straight and then Dan going with a drifting sidearm with this that's got a flattened I think he got the green flag there so he's safe this is actually a pretty tricky approach with that Creek oh yeah you have to clear the creek you have to control the landing and Kevin made it look super easy there damn with a little bit of a run he'll tap into three and James with that tree in the way like you said this is just a really awkward stance for being inside the circle no unfortunately that is unfortunate I mean this is one of the more open greens on the course yes still had that to continue with cow no like he jumped over the edge but it doesn't say like he found a bounds so tap into three as well Oh bogey Oh him so he did go out of bounds and that's unfortunate that is a death putt but for him to for him to air ball low like that is very uncharacteristic and that bogey hurts oh absolutely and no damn it hmm excuse me no damage done pars from James and Kevin the lead is still four and we're moving into hole for par three 432 feet we've seen Kevin play this one for par both days I imagine with a four stroke lead we're gonna see another sidearm from him to land safe up on the hill this one is down toward the water this year there's OB within the circle yeah this basket that we're flying to is I would say about 40 feet to the left now a little bit shorter than it used to be and I think we're gonna see James probably go for it with some sort of flex tried to take a stroke on keV yeah James is two for two on this one with his with his none Thunderbird and Kevin is playing this one conservative again and I'm assuming he knows where he's at he actually put that up pretty decent positioning he's in circle - yeah James is opting for the t-bird today gets this one I think he's a chick mm-hmm Oh No is he gonna get that t-bird back that's one of his faith it's one of the KCT birds that he's throwing something like that yeah it's the it's the swirly star t-bird the KJ Nybo 11-time and he does not like that without that of Elms and it did very uncharacteristic from Dan who has one of the better sidearms that I've ever seen actually really especially power sidearm yeah he can smash Wow and definitely look he got up on that a little bit but Calvin looks like he corrected on James's throw and and just a little short and with this elevated pan with that headwind and with that OB that that's not in a good range stick sit next to the tree it's about 25 from the basket yeah this is gonna be tough from Annie I think he was running it think so just clip those branches but again three in this holes not terrible not losing too many strokes on the field and that's a solid par save from James good uphill tailwind putt and look at that breeze this is this is nearly a direct head win with this elevated paint he's got to get this nose up down didn't write capital with this if you if you just if you don't get that nose up you're not gonna see any lift out of that putt Kevin plant is holed just how he intended walking away with a three and good on James for slamming that par putt because again losing another stroke on him would not be not be the best just with how clean Kevin's been throwing this round already it doesn't look like James got his t-bird back and I'm I'm curious to see how that's gonna play out for the rest of the round what he's uh gonna opt to throw instead because he was throwing that on several holes out here oh yeah and again I don't think James is carrying that many discs with him at this time so no he is definitely carrying one of the more minimalist bags that we've seen so hoping he has some sort of backup going into hole number five I would assume Kevin's gonna be going side are any sidearm players should you know pop a little highs are down the hill I know James is probably gonna go some sort of high turnover and I really think on this hole you want to be a little bit aggressive just to get through the mouth and Kevin's going F five roller actually and that got a very interesting reaction as soon as it hit the ground I can tell if that that he was that a red I couldn't couldn't quite tell in that leaving a window far forward and this is James's Thunderbird and he's corrected on yesterday yesterday we saw him overturn it and cut roll into the out-of-bounds he's going to be in a decent position to get - that green this is Calvin's eagle and there's definitely a wind pocket down there that's really playing with these discs so as you can see he's gone eagle and James went Thunderbird turnover so there's definitely so when to be playing with Dan trying to go rollers well I think he's made the correction pretty nicely this is awesome Wow that's nearly past everything he's gonna have a jump putt to the green that's ideal so it looks like Kevin did go out of bounds he laid that one up just short of the ob Creek and look at this wall of trees here Brian and that's yeah and that's why I said that you know it's good to get a little bit more aggressive off the tee shot so you can at least get through the wall of trees initially so playing a safe Heiser off the tee really isn't gonna do much for you James take an old greenie oh and just oh oh okay well almost sinks it for the - gets right past the tree and gets a little love on the green he's inside 15 feet for a birdie three and he's gonna be picking up at least one on Kevin and that was a great play from keV in previous years they had some sponsor walls set up right at that Creek so he could have easily just crashed into it but this year if you're not playing that layup you know far away enough from the creek you're gonna drift into it so for him to play short and then make a thirty five footer is very cerebral from Kevin to say the least yeah it is not easy to save your par from going OB it's really not so that was a great play James however taking a stroke on keV making it a three stroke ballgame and Dan after probably one of the better shots I've seen in this hole off the tee he has cashed in his easy birdie hole number six I think there's a few different ways to play the hole for a right handed backhand player you'll see a lot of rollers actually if you do have a good flex shot you can smash something stable on an anhyzer and let it drift down there but it's a long hole and you're going uphill right away yeah it's definitely one of the one of the tougher holes to to carta to one we've only seen a few this year the roller did work out for Garrett we've seen an air shot get there and James does normally thrown his t-bird I believe this is gonna be Roadrunner so already were seeing that play out he is he's going roadrunner on a roller and needs this one to flip up and I think the roller is definitely a play if you have it just as you can see look at the fairway slopes down towards the basket so once you get the roller there you lay it down the hills just gonna naturally bring your discs down towards the basket so I really I really like this play I think Dan's gonna be doing the same thing and I guess why would you not after throwing such a perfect roller on the previous hole right not quite sure but he's rolling either a heat or an Avenger SS is usually what most of this graft pros are rolling something under stable something under stable glide II and fast and he's about pin high they're about 90 feet Calvin it's trying to go with the Flex shot and I think that the Flex shots interesting on this hole because the tee pad makes it look like you want to push it out towards that trick in the middle of the fairway but you want to hug it a lot tighter right away yeah you want to be tight Kevin's going f5 roller here and I like this one up and around that is gonna be okay parked Wow perfectly executed roller so nice try by Calvin from a mountain 90 and just look at the sweat on Danny's I mean just shows you how hot it really was during his final round it was scorching out there chalk rosin dirt players were trying to get anything they could on their hands to get the sweat off it was super humid out there no James misses the step Hut and you know just when we looked it almost looked like James was in position to take a stroke before heaven shot now Kevin's parked and he's gonna be taking a stroke and he's feeling it right now he is throwing fantastic shots yeah three down through the first six holes with playing one of those holes for par and as you know we know on this course with how tough the finishing stretch is taking the birdies early is definitely the way to kind of solidify your score so James is definitely gonna have to work a little bit harder as the round progresses but the tides can turn very quickly out here yeah we are heading into I mean really hole seven is where it it starts turning into you know Idlewild I mean when you when you think about Idlewild these are the gaps that you think of this is a 15-foot wide gap and it's really the only option on the whole yeah there's really there's a trick shot Heiser if you want to go very far off the beaten path in this hole but really everyone's trying to get through this tight gap to a very strange landing zone this pill I pay around all routes everywhere there's there's really there's some ideal spots but there's no there's no perfect spot you're gonna have awkward footing if you regardless of where you land we're getting into that part of the course where creativity and just raw shot shaping skill comes into play having a strong sidearm having good you know trick shots to be honest with you but the first goal here is obviously hit the hit the gap Kevin I think is going with that strange Heiser route this this is an insane gap it is not it's not even a thing it's it's really not Brian it's it's not a thing Kevin is actually oh my who died on this hole and he finds the cameraman that is one of the best shots I've seen in this hole that would you need to tune in and watch round 2 again I can't stress enough how little the window is to throw that hyzer that was amazing James taken a more traditional route you know this is just as amazing right there to to hit that gap with a backhand putter shot so technical and he's actually pushed it just a little long he's gonna be out of position Calvin trying to rip a sidearm and it looks like it kicks one of the soldier trees initially I think he's still in bounds but definitely a tough position to get up and out for birdie yeah if you do go up bounce here you are forced to go to a drop zone which is a really difficult really tough then dan hits the gap but again just gets put into a rough rough lie where he's probably gonna have to throw something a little trickier Calvin Calvin was OB I did have to throw from the drop zone he nearly peers at the entire wake it's late tree kicks into the woods he's gonna have to get up and down for his bogey this is the creativity I'm talking about you know even if you pure the gap you're still having to find yourself throw in four hand rollers and James who barely throws anything other than backhand has happened to do that as well and that wasn't too bad from where he was at circles edge Kevin after throwing over the Empire State Building to get there that's such a steep Heiser wow that's a great scramble if you have that Heiser is definitely definitely an option it's not it's not even just about throwing the 500-foot Heiser either that there's a gap to hit off off the tee very small window for sure and it's it's also one of those where you if you don't hit it it's it's like a Ricci yeah it's you have to be fully committed James fully committed on that putt almost mates that makes that falling Anheuser putt but he'll settle for a par Calvin settles for a bogey unfortunately great popeye dan saving the par and a par in this hole is not gonna lose you too many strokes in the field that's a very solid part of it and keV with a birdie look at least this is to go three for three on this very difficult hole seven taking the hyzer out oh boy sneaks in there it into the lower left side of the cage and there is a nother stroke yeah he's really breaking this course open yeah he's almost making this course look easy and this is one of the more I call it slot machine courses that we play he's absolutely puring these lines which is amazing to watch and hole number eight is another one where you have to throw a very interesting shot to a very tight landing zone yeah there there's not a lot of options off the tee here the right hand backhand is is pinched you have to throw something flippy you have to push it forward and get it to flatten as it crests around the corner left you can't go over stable with the hyzer you'll see a lot of sidearm players going with a flex forehand mm-hmm it's a much easier shape to hit if you have it it's about as blind of a tee shot as you're going to see on the disc golf rote or there's a couple reference trees to look at and Kevin is money yeah I mean I watched him and practice hit that non-stop it was a very easy angle for him and he's in a position for an eagle yeah James going under stable rock here it's a decent position yeah gets gets a late kick but he's gonna be in position but he's he's not going to be in a great position for the Eagle Dan thrown a beautiful sidearm that was exactly what we had explained late flatten to the middle of the fairway Calvin hoping to do the same thing oh yeah might be a little stable I may have oh yeah him look good off the tee I think he caught something a little bit late and this is James with an eighth Perkins night strike ooh well he gets lucky just kidding threw everything on that right side and he's got a look at Eagle now that was a great break for James for sure Calvin kicking something he'll have to settle for an up-and-down for a birdie Dan absolutely ripping on this one looking to get up and down and he's starting to look visibly frustrated I think he just feels maybe a little bit off the touch might not be there so what this place does do you man if you you start getting those kicks a couple bad cakes couple bad throws and you are definitely feeling defeated it's one of the courses that we play that I've watched people behave in ways that I've not seen them behave yeah in other tournaments it can certainly break you down mentally like Kevin this is about as an ideal position as you can get it he's got a pure Heiser to the pin he's gonna go bullseye for the Eagle sure yeah I will take that yes sir Kevin is just zoned in he just looks like he's peering shots left and right and throw in the holes exactly how you should be playing them which is which is scary especially if you're trying to chase him yeah he's gonna be approaching 30 under par halfway through the this final round that and I mean 30 under par Brian on this course it's outrageous to even think about those are numbers that were used to seeing but that's those are at open courses yeah yeah those that's like Fountain Hills numbers it's crazy numbers to be honest it's yeah and and again you know with with holes like these you know I think having the creativity to scram a lot of some tough situations and as you can see that you know a lot of people on this card are doing a great job at that Dan tapping in his birdie James with a big putt here for sure cashes it for birdie as well and just when James thought he could either tie or take a stroke Kevin is parked for an eagle 3 yeah it it can't feel good to birdie a hole and lose a stroke to the leader and that's the thing you know these days that our biggest tournaments when you're playing at the top you know top two cards it's crazy to make one mistake can jump it can shoot you all the way down the leaderboard because everybody at the top is so dialed in right now and on this course if you're off by a little bit you will miss by a lot hole number 9 this is one of the shortest holes in the course you'll see a lot of players throw in a slower disc on some sort of sidearm trying to get a low underneath that Bush that's blocking the way or if you are a good putter thrower like I'm assuming James is gonna be doing after one we saw that beautiful ace in round one the corkscrew putter shot it was yeah and this is just crazy you know I tried to look at this after seeing him throw it during round 2 and I just don't see that line really there that was a grenade it was a grenade dude and he parked it yesterday Wow and today it looks like he's just outside a circle one but taking the gap completely out of play once again so impressive and there it is you know there that there was nothing too terribly wrong with that shot just a little inside catches the tree kicks left Dan knows it a little too early and we've seen Calvin struggle with this tee shot rounds 1 & 2 he's opting for the forehand needs to slow down and that's what you're gonna see on that forehand you're gonna see I'm skip and trickle outside of circle one this is a really tough spot right here and that's a solid approach but you see it it that that slope caused that to trickle just two circles edge he's gonna have a tester for a par Dan getting up and down looks like he should be tapping in for his par Kevin never thrown a grenade he was just outside circle one looked like he might have been a little a little blocked had to go with an inch a different different style of putt not one kind of like a jump stab but misses a little low right oh no James fortunately missing that par putt he's gonna be taking a bogey here in Calvin after looking like he was very unsure about what to throw in this one I capitalizes on a birdie which is great you were mentioning you know that Calvin looked like he was struggling with this hole I think you know with Calvin being such a good flat thrower the backhand turn over has to start out on Heiser on this hole so it's interesting that it's a shot shape but he doesn't throw too often and I think for forehand the shot that he prefers most as a Firebird so he has to stick to that yeah we saw him go double bogey bogey in rounds one and two so it's a good to see that correction there yeah and that this is a really tough birdie for James right here he's gonna be losing another stick he is now seven back of the lead going into the back nine and thank you so much for joining us for that front nine coverage we will catch you on the back nine we have Kevin after a blistering front nine has taken a seven stroke lead on James Conrad make sure to LIKE and subscribe to gk pro and we will catch you for the final nine of this awesome battle we're seeing here you
