all right everyone welcome back to gk bros next day coverage of the 2019 Idyllwild open driven by the natty and Nineveh champion discs this is round two back nine coverage I'm Nate Perkins and I'm joined here with Kevin Jones yeah Nate I'm super happy to be here you guys we're gonna bring you right into the action Holton is this an extremely difficult hole this hole does not see very many birdies at all it's very far uphill and the gap is so narrow we're gonna see some impressive shots from these guys yeah taking a look at the leaderboard you are four strokes ahead of second James is three ahead of third and then we're pretty stacked there between third and fourth a lot of people playing great golf here at Idyllwild definitely one of the better years and like you said moving into one of the more difficult par threes on the course it's 368 but it plays more like 415 yeah at least I would say it's just so uphill you're also meaning to throw slightly flip here so that you get that glide my philosophy on the hole is to hang it right side I feel like there's much more air on the right side and I think you can there's just a little bit more room to mess up over there the left side is punishing so like you said you're thrown gliding and you're throwing that glide edie - yep my flippy is d2 on a hyzer and just trying to push it straight and what do you know yeah that just was out of the hand way too early left side and that's gonna be a rather tricky up-and-down yeah very very hard up and down so this is Emerson's recoil a little little hitch right there in his swing it almost looked like he was going to stop and reset but he does hit the gap and he's inside circle - yeah effective Konrad a Thunderbird what that's that's kind of what I was talking about when I say that there's air on that right side Conrad played the right side he didn't pure the gap necessarily mmm but he put the right angle on it and speed and it gets up there all the way to about circles edge that's huge that's not an eagle is it it is it is an eagle and that eagle went all the way inside the circle what speed is an eagle 7-speed aha nine maybe because it's a Firebird right it isn't a Firebird speed I'm not quite sure no but it's definitely not a driver no way and no one inside the circle on the sole and we saw how difficult your approach must have been you catch an early tree yeah I had a really small gap that you know if I hit with that sidearm I might have a putt but that was no-man's land not where you want to be and now I'm 20 feet for bogey yeah for your first bogey of the round and James is about 35 feet yeah two for birdie to get to on you that's right James is licking his chops right now and that little stepper that is he's usually money from that distance a little uphill on that putt gets the cage yeah no doubt he knew out of his hand he said no just out of his hand Calvin dropping in the birdie beautifully done that's how you gain a stroke this is a hole that is just asking for you to take strokes on the field yeah how many how many do you think let's see how many birdies do you think there were on this hole see we've got around 220 people 125 people played ok I'm gonna guess that we had four twos five that's a really good guess so Calvin well we got a shout him out yeah we're definitely shout him out if I choose Calvin Heinberg Nathan Queen the lefty AJ Risley Reed fruss Keira another lefty and my boy Garret glass oh that must've been a sweet side our probably was probably was all rights a whole 11 par 3 242 feet still playing is the easiest hole in the course I'm gonna guess so just because this hole seems to be a 2 or a 3 and it definitely is the easiest hole on the course yeah you definitely want to get this one they backed it up about 50 feet and it made the gap a little more tricky but it's still a pretty pretty routine straight shot kind of a hyzer flip putter flutter shot there are some early trees on the left that that can get in the way we're gonna see a lot of people opt for whatever they're most confident with hitting the gap with whoa a lot of help from the tree right there right up to the wall and that's that's gonna be pretty routine from there I laughed at Emerson because he steps up to this hole he's got an explorer and a stiletto in his hand and it's just funny to me it just looks like such a straight shot but he's so pure with that and he's more confident with hitting that line with his optics and Explorer yeah just like you said it's like whatever you're most comfortable with and while on paper this might be a straight putter shot I know a lot of people do like to approach it with a forehand yes definitely hitting the gap and it gives them a nice putt Conrad caught a little bad break there he hit the gap perfectly got all the way up there and kicked off to about 25 feet and I hit the last tree on the right that's gonna kick me a 40 feet uphill feels like pretty far yeah it looks pretty far especially with that elevated pin oh just nailed it spinning it back look how low I mean your knuckles touch the ground actually touch the ground yeah the grass tall grass definitely can cause me problems when I'm doing jump putts wow that's so sick to get that low though it's awesome that was a big putt for me really happy to get a 2 on this one this is Conrad to answer reset right there that was the chains in the background okay right as he was pulling down somebody bang chains hey that's not the worst thing to hear is hear about the putz know some more chains yeah just reset a second and bang it nice putt from James yeah that's a good putt from Calvin to that that's only you know 15 20 feet but it's so far uphill the basket just looks a little bit smaller and your strokes a little bit different too yeah definitely definitely a different release point now Emerson I hate to say it but he's got to putt even even more vertical you have to you have to he's got the wall in his way to the wall in the way of his stroke he can't go backwards that much because you have to stand right behind your lie obviously but he managed it pretty well that's that's an all-star birdie from his lead card yeah it sure was that's good grouping right there and you know Haas cracking up at us Kevin we were we were commenting on this being the final third it's actually the final seven holes I was laughing at our math exhibit but these final seven holes this is really where the tournament gets going hole 12 par four dogleg left dogleg right excuse me and it it's just it's so difficult to get this one to stop moving in the right spot yeah the ideal landing area is just so small and then you got the question well what is the ideal landing area Calvin you have throwing to the wall here cuz he's okay with having a longer shot to the green but he's playing to his strengths he's playing to that Eagle he wants that Eagle shot and there's Emerson's justice that's a huge line for a justice but I like it though it seems like a ground plays minimal he's actually gonna be in a pretty good spot he's down the hill but I think he's far enough that he's gonna have an angle for a backhand yeah I think that's totally workable Konrad old greenie throwing a putter that never stops flipping that's his that's his ace disc right there that's the ace deuce a corkscrew frisbee I made sure to tell him nice sidearm after that one that's funny we're always joking and play together a lot and you know I'm big sidearm guy and he's we're throwing the same lines yeah yeah definitely funny that's me throwing a x1 I do that because I'm trying to push it far and catch a massive skip that needs to get just around those trees this is looking beautiful Wow one and that is inside circle one that was your best shot of the round thus far yeah likely just being the level of difficulty of that shot was pretty tough I mean late flipping with a hyzer finish and this is this is definitely one of the more difficult pins to access it's you almost have to saw it off to really get there because of how sloped it is if you push anything it they just tend to float down the hill yeah yeah like kind of too far straight mm-hmm yeah you see it all the time this is md4 from James that looks a little early on it is catches one of the guardian trees yeah this is one of the toughest execution birdies on the course just takes two extremely well-placed shots so yeah Emerson is an ideal position and you can see this one looks good but it's gonna it's still gonna filter long oh oh and it just gets an unfortunate roll as well I mean that actually might have checked up inside circle one without that roll yeah that's one of those things I'm gonna need to tell him like that's what his disc did there before he plays his final round cuz we totally thought that was just way too far but it really wasn't close run from Calvin in a nice run to like well good speed on it yeah cuz this one this one does slope quite a bit and if you go too long there there's some thick bushes that can prevent a comeback but yeah it'll happen faster than you could think yeah and just a little too straight interesting MIDI opted to putt with that flippy putter right there he's normally putting with this with his normal AVR from that distance oh really looks like Emerson had a window but a pretty tight one and this is for a huge birdie and to take a four stroke lead just low but I'm happy to take a par on this hole yeah man it's Calvin you know you said it yourself that Calvin's run looked nice and soft but yeah that slope took it to 25 feet yeah that slope like you are saying is very deceiving your disc can end up much further than you might think then that happens on the up shots and it happens on putts it also happens on rollaways too you hit the basket and you can roll away it's at 45 feet here right within the whole 13 the wide tree hole as we fly through it right here are for this year 472 feet and you can look at that map and just see how much OB there really is on this hole actually I don't know if I've seen a map like that yes thanks so much OB it's a good description and then look at this right here look at this green look how much OB so it's actually safe right behind the pin but you can see those white lines right there noting the OB to the left and to the right yep I absolutely love this whole I think it's so signature to this course and it's it gets my heart beating faster than any other hole in the course because if you I mean if you don't hit the gap that that's actually fortunate ya for it to square that tree up and to not go B because if you go early left it's instant v yep instant v and it could be a bigger number depending on how greedy you get from out of position Emerson is pretty much falling from there at best yeah and that's always hard to swallow when it's such an easy birdie if you hit the gap hmm beautiful play from there James jump putting to to a birdie 3 yeah with a backstop that's automatic yeah hey kid he has a chance to give it a good run also so are you throwing something stable right here yeah I'm going d1 my backhand d1 it's pretty over stable I'm also like hugging the left side of the tee box because I feel like that makes my gap bigger for some reason oh my goodness dude I mean yeah please stop rolling that was that was headed for the creek long and you're actually gonna have a 45 footer for Eagle 2 Yeah right around there executed that shot perfectly and I could not be happier it's nice to know that you're walking up to your disc with pretty much birdie at worst Calvin doing it as well I got two great shots that is how we are trying to play this hole this is a pretty fun shot right here Emerson is gonna throw a big flick with something rather flippy trying to break around the corner and he's he's gonna have a look actually yeah for a three that was awesome from where he is to have a three a putt for three is unbelievable geyser whoa it actually still looks like it's in the bucket it does it does right in front of it this time that means Emerson's going right in the middle right and that would be huge yeah would be this would be an insane three Emerson has one of the best step putts in the game if you ask me he has been a little bit off today but at any point he can catch fire oh oh and that's just to the right side and really fortunate not to not to balance I mean actually it would be just rather unfortunate to see it bounce that far but it looked like it yeah it looked like it was going for a second it definitely scared me and you're moving to 20 under par for the tournament we are not done with round two you're absolutely shredding the course I mean in years past we've seen I believe that 16 down actually won the tournament in 2017 the pars only changed by one so you're crushing previous years that's crazy to hear and we're moving on to into hole 14 par-4 556 feet another signature hole on the course you've got a staggered 15-foot gap the only gap yep off the tee and like we said yesterday it's one of those where you have to hit the gap if you want to score it once you hit the gap the hole becomes much much easier and I just can't believe that James has been so consistent on this gap with a backhand and this time off by a foot just a foot and now he's in very very tough position to save par yeah especially being that he's probably gonna opt for some kind of back end somehow yeah yeah I don't even know what it's like right there yeah it's tough that's it's what a lot of a big percentage of the field knows what that feels like man that was so lucky yeah that was that was a complete misfire right there yeah really left yep at this point my my forehand is actually feeling a little bit weird I was a little bit nervous for the upcoming four hands with that release something to do with the grip or not sure quite at all yeah yeah that's never a good feeling to to feel some sort of hesitation like that with one of your shots made around yes like out here especially yeah we've also got a note that I mean it's we're in Kentucky we're in the middle of the summer and this is a this is a difficult track that we're playing a lot of Hills a lot of walking we're hot and this is this is the point in the round where you've got you got some backups you know you're in the Sun like what is he looking at what did he see there like how did he see that line it's unbelievable to me yeah but he's just he can get the disc going so straight out of his hand she's a magician dude straight up this is going places Calvin did a similar thing as James almost even more difficult unfortunately catching a late tree that he can't really control it looked like that was headed to the green it would have had a chance I think Emerson is also lining up something pretty crazy we're all in hairy positions right here just trying to get down to this flow down that you know is sick yeah such a good shot he had nothing and is this where you're driving it this is where the drive landed very fortunate to have a straight line at it but now it's it's poke and pray yeah that's a wall you just you're just throwing it hard yeah I was going for the green for sure because I know that my my my my chances are miss all the trees and scoot back to the back of the green for a putt or hit a tree and hopefully drop safe and jump cut over kind of thing yeah there is a creek right there that can catch them but it's it would just be unfortunate to to find the creek on a power shot like that yeah Calvin was way out of position right there but getting on the green is good oh and goober Colin boy you were definitely falling for it it looked like it was on line yeah so this is old greeny again his flippy putter looks like he's gonna start this one left of that tree right in front of him good that was so close what a pretty putt yeah Shane hight and turning such a unique way to think about making making it yeah always giving it a chance from distance I love it look at this hinge putt right here left hip steps into it yeah he's just a little off today yeah on that putt normally he is he's drawing metal at the least really like he's really good at this step but oh yes Calvin with a great par from out of position to out of position to out of position yeah saving the park yeah that's awesome good putt from Conrad also getting in for par that's why you ready players that's that's a 22 footer but it's a 22 footer for par and it's just modified yeah well you know even in 1015 a thousand rated player they're gonna miss that a few times out of ten yep it's very true on to hole 15 crucial tee shot time it's time to get up in the landing area anywhere in here to here will do just fine yeah there's there's not a lot of options on this hole you really need to keep this one in the middle of the fairway to have any kind of chance to approach this basket James is actually going Nate Perkins tonight strike off the tee I gave this one to him a few years back and he's been working it ever since I was looking so good yeah just again just a little high yeah he actually through the night strike a couple other times this round I think very effectively nice that's a good disc oh no Nate now I love that tree yesterday I love that and dude it's not only did you hit the tree but you hit the right side of the tree in it right yeah it would say job what you're gonna have over there but it's gonna be dark yeah Emerson doing exactly what I want to do yeah that's that's that's my play as well you want you want to force it over end up on the left side so that you have an angle you're going I'm getting jiggy where the cool that God in the fairway thankfully it was I had just a beautiful window up there too get up there somewhere I feel like my my chances were five at worst kind of thing so oh and he sneaks around the tree - beautiful beautiful shot so that did split a tree on the left side it did you see the leaning one it went around it it went just left of it man like sometimes you need a little bit of love yeah you just put the disc on the right line right angle and it works out is so sick yeah I'm glad you think that is such a difficult shot the patent-pending force over Annie go and try that one at home and - and tell me how difficult that one is be Wow yeah being on the slope it just adds difficulty to it and he had to throw a fast disc because that's the only way he's getting it there Calvin was in a much more ideal spot and you've got almost the same type of shot that Emerson had it's just so hard to be accurate when I mean that is not at all the normal throwing stance just so hard to be accurate like that for definitely putting it on the right line is not easy in that situation I'm happy to be inside the circle kaboom James Conrad birdie that's a huge birdie but what you're about to do right here this is to save par this is from the exact same distance as Conrad's but so this is to only lose one stroke on the hole and we can't say enough about that par save I'd I don't know many players that are gonna hit the front us the first available tree right there it is a pad and an worst case scenario kick I mean you did say you had a window but that is such an excellent up-and-down for par especially when the competitor right behind you is is in the circle for birdie it's a huge up-and-down Kevin left hip spin put bread on the pole dead center that's a sweet birdie the pudding on this card has been extremely professional in my opinion like you're not seeing any misses inside a 15 feet that's for sure first off and also given huge runs on the outside the circle putts always on the basket just solid pudding in my opinion hole 16 the way I break this whole down is and I have enough power to on this second shot I can throw over all this OB all the tall grass and that's the idea that's what you're gonna see all the big arm players do getting that first shot in bounds allows you to secure a fairly easy birdie but landing this first shot in bounds there's nothing easy about that we just waited on two cards to tee off also so we're we're a little bit rusty that's definitely big to note and it was much windier during around - yeah there's a right-to-left wind out there that makes this so much harder James throwing t-bird and Wow just look at the white of the disc that disc is so good I mean it never it was never out of balance never man rode that right side just how you want to throw it so this right-to-left wind it actually makes it makes the Heiser so much more difficult because you have to start it out wide knowing that it's gonna lift it and carry it so both of these players are opting to just to throw straight shots yeah it kind of fits their their playing style both of those guys are really good at mashing fairway drivers flat but like you said the right-to-left wind makes the room for error on this hole much smaller so Emerson starting this one wide he needs a little bit of wind to help to get back in horrific-looking Drive and you know like you said you get this one inbounds and for a player like yourself it it kind of makes the hole pretty easy from there but for the rest of the field if you can't throw for 5500 feet the second shot is just as difficult as the first because if you're not able to carry the rest of the OB you again have to throw a placement shot into this skinny fairway and it's sloping downhill all the Heiser's are heading straight toward the OB yep so these guys are gonna make it look easy but I'm telling you it's definitely not an easy second shot yeah it's a nightmare second shot honestly and Calvin was way out of position here but he knows he's got the power he had to throw full flex and just barely clears the OB like full flex we I thought it was good well yeah I thought there was nothing to worry about but he was just so far back there that you needed every bit of flex that he got and it shows you Calvin is one of the furthest throwing players in our sport and coordinated player and he just barely got past the out of bounds shows you how much power you really need man you've got the Linnaean power that is a huge shot nice I went x1 off the tee to glide IDI to making sure that it holds the line long enough for me and it gets me in a were cold spot for the birdie Emerson letting loose on it I love it he always tells me how he thinks he can't throw far really yeah that's ridiculous though and that is also another fortunate direction at that disc role they could yeah definitely cut toward that out out of bounds but yeah the kid can definitely definitely throw we've got a canon backhand and sidearm james conrad is in a money position right now way up the fairway what is he throwing with that I'm not quite sure though this guy I know his whole bag but I don't know what that was he slipped what is it I don't know what that he borrowed one of Calvin's destroy yeah I think maybe so that's a destroyer shot for him so now really touchy shot on to the green huh yeah this is tricky because unlike other holes on the course the the backstop is OB he out here on this par 5 well done from Calvin and again here's that jump putt that might look routine that is not an easy shot you had to bend that around the tree yeah I threw my I told James Conrad my James Conrad flippy AVR it was a PA for just making sure it holds some hold some Anheuser forever I was really happy with that shot Emerson also thrown a really good shot on to the green sidearm kind of using the backstop the little couple inches of backstop that there is this is Conrad for Eagle outside circle - oh wow let's go James Caan ran it back look at that commitment that was a chance to gain a stroke on the lead also what a putt from James Conrad just trotting away and for the moment he's tied it up I mean youyou do have a putt for birdie a pretty short putt for birdie yeah that was a huge putt to be able to gain a stroke there and that's nice it's the only way to gain a stroke on UK this is to Eagle the whole well done James Conrad such a good putt actually carting the only Eagle on the day on this hole Wow yeah this whole averaged something like a 5.6 for Wow forty-nine percent of the field was above par whoa yeah that shows you how much affected to play during round two and we just have a great battle going on here I am so happy to be here commentating on this coverage right now yeah this is super exciting stuff and the Idyllwild course is just unbelievably entertaining to watch all these guys lace lines on and make big putts plenty of Eagle opportunities out there it's just this is one of them right here - this one's a par 4 this year a hole 17 418 feet just a snake river of OB the entire way yeah James Conrad's gonna throw a t-bird here in his play is to hit the gap flat and get up there because if he hits the gap and finishes left he'll likely be safe but that is not a gap hit and that's early left which is actually OB and that is trouble that's a horrible place to be yeah it's not fun to be there and we saw Calvin play that right side yesterday to perfection he's trying it again taking that eagle and he's also gonna get a just worst case kick same result Oh James early left and I really love this play right here Emerson is lining up the stable forehand through that gap that you can see with Emerson's power he can get just to the landing area that you need he just started that one out too wide see I think Lee's also be so after seeing three OB shots that is laced boom Wow I thought so luckily I just hit enough of the gap to like the only way I would have went OB is falling into the creek mm-hmm I fell safe but I was happy with that line Conrad is going for the green he's gonna use the backstop but just doesn't get it there across the green right there we said that he crossed the green from the the point that his disc was laying it was tough for anybody to see and the spotters were all near us because there are three obese where we were so so he'll be dropping in a five Emmerson for hand roller told the crowd to look out what a shot yeah Wow perfect yeah filtering through the the trees on the right side two straight at the basket so Calvin has a decision to make right here and looks like he's gonna lay this one up short of the green leave himself a putt it's just so it's so hard to leave yourself that putt though because yeah he's got a straight death but yes he does a little bit of a backstop I had to think about this one for a long time I just had a weird tree in the way jump putt coming in huge handy for me again Kevin that jump putt is saving you stroke after stroke on this difficult course yeah otherwise I would have had to like toss a finesse putter up and it just would have been so difficult much easier to jump on it Emerson just just off on his jump but again that would have been an incredible save come on Calvin oh yeah little fist pump how pretty was that oh yeah doesn't get much better than that right there fantastic for save Emerson with the bogey early OB is gonna cost him you see how hard the par save is from where they all went OB Calvin was the only one to save par and it took in an incredible putt and you're gonna be picking up two on James and Calvin right there it's back to square one yeah three strokes lead that's right crazy and we're moving into hole 18 par-4 650 feet this gap right here it's maybe 350 to the mouse 400 to the mouse right yeah look at the map look how tight it looks on the map I totally agree that's pretty realistic it definitely is the round is not even close to being over even though we're on hole 18 yeah you called it the add 1 hole yesterday I absolutely loved that nickname yes it could be more than that it could very well could and that's early left side a little bit sneaky but yeah yeah and it kicks left yeah that's that's definitely not a good place to be you might have to pitch that one out right the goal here is get out of the tunnel and - and I might not even be able to do that from there calvinists oh man oh my goodness I love seeing that disc fly like that yeah it is perfect it's about as good as we've ever seen that's so so good dead center fairway which is where you have to be if you're gonna score a birdie on this hole Conrad it's time to lace one yeah he's definitely he's definitely a little heated after after taking his first bogey of the round on hole 17 oh that's a great shot down riding the fairway nearly the entire way gets a late tree but he covered ground yeah plenty of ground he could possibly find his way out of the tunnel into but looking at birdie is tough from there oh it's just simple earlier release it was a pretty tough day for Emerson and Nate you know what it feels like when you've had a rough day and then you come into this hole it seems almost hopeless like it really does it really does as you can see here I guess I could have done something crazy forehand trying to get out of the gap my decision was let's lay up to where I want my drive to land and let's play the sidearm from that area and see what happens try to execute it Conrad is literally thinking the exact same thing thing from where he is but that tree on his backhand he landed right by a tree in that that's just not it by any means a routine back end no I mean that that live wouldn't bother you that lie wouldn't bother me but that that's certainly a tough life for James he is he gonna have to think about a forehand right there I would I mean personally I would be thinking about it this is big right here you can definitely get up and down from this position yes going D - I love it out of my hand oh wow that is nasty dude that is inside 12 feet to save a par couldn't be happier it's it's almost even more satisfying to lay up like put it in the fairway and then save a par rather than execute the birdie Calvin to be a bull side birdie he threw the same disc as his Drive yeah he went mid-range me rock rock to the pin count him a birdie Conrad says what tree I don't even know how that's possible he throws stable here is that the t-bird I think it think it's the stable tuber that has just no turn at all on it these guys have so much body control I mean we saw Garrett throw a similar shot yesterday where he just got his body out of the way I just don't understand how that that shot right there it's possible with the back end I think Garrett is a really good comparison to to James they're the only guys that I can think of with as much body control MJ kind of being up there too but the body control and their release control is unreal emerson inches again from from that putt that is just so sick James isn't it finishing off with a par after being out of position I mean both of you guys and you're gonna tie for the round those are a couple of 10 under par that Idyllwild we were walking down the fairway to the basket on this hole and we pretty much we got a standing ovation it was it was super cool the fans were loving the action yeah what a great hole to finish on and that's just some great coverage Kevin yeah I mean if you're not as excited as as us I don't know what to tell you that was some amazing disc-off being played from all around now we've got a three-stroke lead going into the final round your final round card will be Kevin Jones James Conrad Calvin Heinberg and Dan Hastings yeah congratulations to Dan for making a lead card for the final round thank you guys for joining us on this gk pro coverage we'll see you in round 3 see there
